Expressions Cultural Arts Center is located in Nanaimo, BC with the intention to serve neurodiverse children between the ages of 8 and 18. This center promotes learning within the arts and creates socialization and connections between all users of the space.

Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder or ASD have varying needs and interests and Expressions needs to accommodate the diversity of this in order to be supportive to all. To do so, the arts will help promote connection between others and opportunities to learn how to handle and cope with social and emotional situations that may happen throughout their lives in a safe and supportive environment.

The challenge comes in designing a space that both promotes creativity while supporting neurodiverse individuals without creating an overwhelming environment. Through careful zoning for acoustics and activity levels, relief and sensory spaces, as well as careful material, finish and lighting specifications, this was achieved through various research and interviews conducted.

With aims to remove the stigma around neurodiverse children, and to create a space that allows kids to fully express themselves, Expressions Cultural Arts Center is the place to be to practice the arts such as theatre, music and art!
